Weekly Update from the Chief Executive

Dear Friends

The 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings is being commemorated across the district today. This evening beacons will be lit at Newbold Comyn and Kenilworth Castle as a symbol of peace and light which emerged from the darkness of war. Throughout the month we will be remembering the bravery and sacrifice of all those who have served our country and also celebrating local regiments with our Armed Forces Day in St Nicholas Park on 29 June and a military style opening of Fusiliers Way on 22 June.

In other news this week:

• It’s now official! Notices of a Parliamentary election for the constituencies of Kenilworth & Southam and Warwick & Kenilworth on 4 July have been posted on our website along with the all-important dates, deadlines, application forms and ID requirements. There are also details of paid temporary positions to assist us at polling stations and the elections count.

• To mark Volunteers Week and the Big Help Out (1 to 9 June) charities, community groups and organisations have been opening their doors to the public to meet their staff and volunteers and promote the many and varied volunteering opportunities available in our area. There’s a live interactive map of all the remaining events taking place including Guide Dogs, Friends of Foundry Wood, Bagot’s Castle and Mind. Contact WCAVA for further details.

• At their meeting on 5 June Cabinet gave their approval to the findings of a business case to bring forward plans for the development, expansion, and relocation of the Packmores Community Centre in Warwick. The scheme proposes the establishment of a new centre at Priory Pools which will better meet the social, health and wellbeing needs of the area.

And finally, good luck to all those taking part in Sunday’s Two Castles Run. This iconic 10km event linking the district’s two beautiful castles is now in its 40th year and has become a hugely successful local fundraising event. It’s also a wonderful spectacle, so please come out to cheer the participants on… the start is at 9am from Warwick Castle.
