Not many people know that Kenilworth can lay claim to be the birthplace of modern day cycling. It’s here that in 1869 Edward Langley Fardon made the first ever journey on a steel-spoked, rubber tyred bicycle setting out from Warwick Road to Leek Wootton.
Following the election of 2019 the Town Council established a Cycling Strategy Working group to work with residents to identify their priorities for cycling in Kenilworth. This group, including more than 20 residents created a draft strategy which was adopted by the Town Council in December of 2019. This included identifying priority cycle routes, improvements to cycling infrastructure and how we could encourage more people in the town to travel by bicycle.
This group has now become the Cycling Delivery Group and is continuing to work to bring these ideas to fruition. This includes liaison with other local authorities (County Council and District Council) and local schools as well as members of the group taking forward activities.
Warwickshire Cycling
For those residents inspired to get on their bikes by the Warwickshire stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men’s race, Visit Warwickshire is launching Great Rides, an online resource which highlights some of the best cycling routes around the county.
Warwickshire offers a rich and varied visitor experience that blends world-renowned heritage with hidden local treasures. These include incredible spaces for outdoor leisure and fitness, including municipal parks and gardens, Warwickshire Country Parks, waterways, nature reserves and miles of cycling routes, both on and off road.
In celebration of the Lloyds Tour of Britain (ToB) 2025, Visit Warwickshire is pleased to launch Great Rides, an online resource which lists just some of the cycling routes the county offers, introducing Warwickshire’s towns and inspiration for leisure cycling to residents and visitors alike.
Great Rides enables cycle race enthusiasts to follow the drama of the race and showcases Warwickshire’s all year round offer for cyclists. The Leisure Cycling section lists some of the best-known biking journeys in Warwickshire, including National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 5 and NCN Route 41. There is also a section on accessible off-road routes available at Warwickshire’s country parks and greenways.
Great Rides offers a carefully curated collection of route suggestions complete with maps, trail descriptions and points of interest along the way.
