Devolution Deal and Investment Zone form ‘significant long-term milestones’ for Warwickshire

A significant long-term milestone has been reached for Warwickshire with news in the Chancellor’s budget that the County Council is to be one of three councils to be awarded a Level 2 Devolution Deal.

The deal will give the county increased powers to tackle two key agendas – levelling up and climate change – through devolution of its own Adult Education budget and strategic oversight of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The percentage of Warwickshire children offered one of their top three school choices climbs for the third year running!

This year, there were 7,172 Warwickshire children who applied for a secondary place by the application deadline, an increase of almost 7% on the previous year.

Warwickshire County Council welcomed Hong Kong communities at the Lunar New Year Festival

On Saturday 24 February 2024 Hongkongers from across Warwickshire came together at Old Shire Hall, Warwick to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The event, organised by Warwickshire County Council, in collaboration with partners including the Positive Youth Foundation, Coventry City Council, West Midlands Strategic Migration Partnership, and Groundwork UK, was an opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultures of Warwickshire and welcome the newly arrived community members from Hong Kong.

“Hey Foster Carer” Warwickshire Listens to the Voices of Children in Care

Warwickshire County Council’s fostering team celebrated the launch of their “Hey Foster Carer” initiative, a booklet amplifying the voices of children in care.

The event, held at Old Shire Hall on February 28 2024, drew attendees interested in fostering and fostering-friendly organisations. We also welcomed experienced foster carers who were keen to listen to children in care.

Vast variety of moths found at Ryton Pools Country Park highlight biodiversity success

Nestled in the centre of Warwickshire, Ryton Pools Country Park is a much-loved green space enjoyed by visitors of all ages. It’s also an important site for conservation and the promotion of biodiversity and has been the subject of a fascinating moth survey since 2012.

51,868 moths of 650 species were found in 2023 following conservation efforts.

New webpages give insight into life in the Fire Control Room

Visitors to the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service webpages will now be getting an insight into one of the many fascinating aspects of working with the service as the new Fire Control pages go live.

Those who are tempted to pursue a career in the Control Room can now get a head start with a tab that enables them to register their interest.  Potential applicants will automatically be notified when recruitment to the Control Team takes place.

Help build a smoke free generation and quit for No Smoking Day

Whilst smoking rates have reduced considerably compared to 40 years ago, there is still a long way to go to become a smoke free generation. There are over 66,000 people in Warwickshire who smoke, which is 13.9% of adults aged 18+ in the county

Enhanced junction in Leamington supports priority for walking and cycling

The works have involved construction of a road hump on Cloister Crofts with give-way markings for drivers.  A contrasting surface on the road hump will make the crossing more visible for drivers and help to separate the cycle track section from the footway, whilst providing a continuous and level route for walking, wheeling and cycling. The road hump will support lower vehicle speeds into and out of Cloister Crofts, making the junction safer for all.

The UK Says No More campaign (3 – 9 March 2024) is a driver of change and one that Warwickshire is backing to help promote the support services available throughout the county for victim-survivors. Warwickshire says NO MORE.

As well as benefiting the young person, by enabling them to develop transferrable skills to take into the workplace and building confidence, supported internships have been reported to bring wider benefits to the whole business, improving staff morale and reducing sickness.

Help to meet household utility costs

Until 22 March 2024 the council’s Local Welfare Scheme is distributing the final allocation of government funding from the Department for Work and Pensions’ Household Support Fund to people living in the county who are finding it difficult to meet these household costs.

Raising awareness of the support available for those who self-harm

On this year’s Self-Harm Awareness Day on Friday 1 March, Warwickshire County Council shared with residents the mental health support available to them.

Self-Harm Awareness Day has been running for over 20 years and aims to raise awareness around what is often a very misunderstood topic, working to tackle the stigma of self-harm, which can lead to secrecy and a failure to seek much-needed support.
