Weekly Update from the Chief Executive

Dear Friends

A busy day across our polling stations was followed by a long night (and early morning) at Stoneleigh Park to verify and then count the tens of thousands of ballot papers and postal votes cast across our two constituencies. In the early hours (after 4am) came the declarations, with our congratulations going to Matt Western (Labour) who was re-elected as MP for Warwick & Leamington and Jeremy Wright re-elected as MP for Kenilworth & Southam.

At 66.11% (Warwick & Leamington) and 75.49% (Kenilworth & Southam) turnout was well above the national average (60%).

An enormous thank you goes to teams from across the Council for their hard work and support in ensuring the smooth running of the elections; with a particular mention to the elections and democracy staff for rising to the many challenges (often unexpected) a snap election can bring.

In other news:

• The Arts Team is busily preparing for Ignite 2024, our summer social for the creative community, which returns to the Royal Pump Rooms next Thursday 11 July, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. This event brings together visual art, performances, talks and opportunities to connect with local organisations and artists. You can book your free ticket via the Spa Centre website.

• We’re pleased to see that Warwickshire County Council has just released their summer HAF Programme (Monday 22 July to Friday 30 August), which offers a good range of free activities (and meals) aimed at young people from Reception to Year 11 who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals. There is a big choice available from providers across our district, with more information on the WCC holiday activities website page.

• Concert season has begun at Warwick Castle, with a world-class line up of live music including Chaka Khan, Noel Gallagher, Craig David and McFly which over the next fortnight will attract audiences in their thousands. We are confident that the series will bring a big boost to Warwick town centre businesses including hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops.

And finally………we wish the England football team good luck in their quarter final match against Switzerland tomorrow, whether it’s from behind the sofa or in your local pub, we hope you enjoy the game!
